Consultant Anaesthesiologist – 32h PUH + 5h RUH

About the role

The Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at Portiuncula University Hospital is recruiting a Consultant Anaesthesiologist for a 1‑year appointment. The post is split between 32 hours per week at Portiuncula University Hospital (PUH) and 5 hours per week at Roscommon University Hospital (RUH), with participation in a 1:6 on‑call rota.

Key responsibilities

• Provide anaesthesia for elective surgical procedures across multiple specialties, including general surgery, gynaecology, urology, paediatric urology, maxillofacial surgery and paediatric dentistry.
• Deliver obstetric anaesthesia services such as epidural analgesia and anaesthesia for caesarean sections, supporting approximately 1,600 deliveries per year.
• Participate in the intensive care unit, managing ventilated, HDU and coronary care patients and facilitating inter‑hospital transfers of critically ill maternity patients.
• Contribute to chronic pain services on weekdays.
• Engage in teaching and education activities as required.

Required profile

• Specialty Registration on the Medical Council Register is essential.
• Qualified Consultant Anaesthesiologist with experience in both anaesthesia and intensive care.
• Willingness to work a 1:6 on‑call rota covering both PUH and RUH sites.
• Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary surgical and obstetric teams.
