Leading Hand – Mechanical (Mining Equipment)

About the role

The Leading Hand – Mechanical will act as a Heavy Equipment Fitter, performing both preventative maintenance and unscheduled repairs on shovel and drill equipment at Newmont's Lihir operation. The role supports shift supervisors, contributes to a high‑performance safety culture, and helps maximise equipment availability in a demanding FIFO environment.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out preventative maintenance and emergency repairs on O&K, Cat 6060 shovels and Sandvik/Epiroc drills.
• Support shift supervisors and step in to relieve supervision duties when required.
• Ensure compliance with Newmont Safety and Environment Management Systems.
• Drive continuous improvement in maintenance strategies, systems and practices.
• Assist in training and developing tradesmen and contractors in a technically complex operation.

Required profile

• 3‑5 years heavy‑equipment experience in a mining maintenance environment, including at least 2 years in a leadership role.
• Trade qualification (NATTB) or higher certification in a mechanical engineering discipline.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a proven track record of diagnosing and repairing complex equipment.
• Experience using SAP for maintenance planning and reporting.
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to work within PNG cultural contexts.
