About the role
The Staff Automation Engineer will be the technical authority for industrial automation at Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Limerick, driving design, implementation and continuous improvement of control systems across multiple platforms.
Key responsibilities
- Provide automation expertise during design reviews and create detailed documentation such as URS, FDS, SDS, SAT, FAT and functional test plans.
- Develop, debug and validate machine control software covering servo, pneumatic, safety, electrical and data control.
- Mentor junior engineers and guide technical direction to resolve quality issues and support CAPA actions.
- Collaborate with operations, quality and engineering teams to deliver robust, future‑proof solutions on time and to required quality standards.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent.
- 9‑10 years of proven experience working with automated control systems in a machine design environment.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks under tight schedules.
- Highly motivated self‑starter with excellent interpersonal communication.
Required skills
- Extensive PLC experience: Allen‑Bradley ControlLogix 5000, Siemens S7, Schneider (Elau), Pilz and Guardlogix Safety PLCs.
- HMI development using Wonderware Intouch/ArchestrA and FactoryTalk View.
- Knowledge of safety controls, machinery regulations, electrical systems, servo motion control, vision systems and robotics.
- Familiarity with data systems (MES, product tracking, Level 2‑3 interfaces), RFID, data analytics, AI and ML concepts.
- Experience in validated environments with strong change‑control understanding.
