Staff Backend Engineer – Submission Processing

About the role

We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to lead the Submission Processing team in Ireland. You will work at the intersection of backend engineering, AI, and large‑scale data processing to build reliable systems that handle billions of unstructured data points.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and scale backend systems that power AI‑driven workflows for processing large volumes of complex, unstructured data.
• Own technical direction for the Submission Processing team, making architectural decisions and driving engineering excellence.
• Develop and maintain LLM‑based applications that extract insights, automate workflows, and support critical business decisions.
• Build robust, scalable infrastructure using cloud technologies, asynchronous processing patterns, and modern backend practices.
• Lead system design discussions, identify technical challenges, and deliver end‑to‑end solutions from concept to production.
• Improve reliability, performance, and scalability of backend services while maintaining high engineering standards.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to translate business needs into technical solutions and deliver measurable customer impact.
• Experiment with new technologies, evaluate approaches, and iterate quickly on unsolved problems.
• Mentor engineers, contribute to technical culture, and establish best practices across teams.

Required profile

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong backend development and system design.
• Proven track record of owning complex technical projects and delivering end‑to‑end solutions in ambiguous environments.
• Strong programming skills in Python or another object‑oriented language, with a focus on clean, production‑ready code.
• Hands‑on experience building and deploying LLM‑powered applications or AI systems in production.
• Deep understanding of backend architecture, distributed systems, debugging, scalability, and performance optimization.
• Experience working with AWS services and cloud‑based architectures.
