Staff Engineer, Observability

About the role

We are seeking a Staff Engineer to design, build, and operate MongoDB’s internal and external Observability stack. The role will lead architecture and implementation of systems that handle billions of metric time‑series, petabytes of logs, traces and events, supporting both MongoDB engineers and customers.

Key responsibilities

• Architect and build mission‑critical components of the observability platform, focusing on performance, scalability, cost‑efficiency and resiliency.
• Design and implement improvements that enable rapid diagnosis of production issues for engineers and customers.
• Handle production escalations, mentor teammates, and participate in on‑call rotation.
• Write and maintain production‑ready code, conduct code reviews, and ensure high standards for security, durability, availability and performance.
• Collaborate with product, SRE and other engineering teams to define roadmaps, advise on technical direction and drive large initiatives.

Required profile

• Minimum 10 years of experience designing, programming, debugging and tuning distributed or highly concurrent mission‑critical software systems.
• Strong systems fundamentals, including multi‑threaded programming, performance profiling and expert‑level programming in languages such as C/C++, Java, Go or Rust.
• Experience with latency‑sensitive, high‑throughput systems and familiarity with database internals or data‑processing components (nice to have).
• Excellent verbal and written communication, collaboration and mentorship skills.
