Staff Nurse – Operating Theatre (Permanent)

About the role

The Staff Nurse will join the multidisciplinary team in the operating theatre and endoscopy suites at UPMC Whitfield Hospital. This permanent position provides evidence‑based nursing care to patients undergoing surgery or endoscopic procedures, ensuring safety, dignity and high‑quality service.

Key responsibilities

• Practice in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland Code of Professional Conduct and hospital policies.
• Deliver caring, efficient nursing care to all patients, respecting privacy and confidentiality.
• Coordinate ward activities in the absence of the CNM and act as a mentor or buddy for new staff.
• Participate actively in anaesthetic, scrub, circulating, PACU and endoscopy duties as required.
• Prepare and maintain equipment and instruments for surgery and endoscopy, updating consultant preference cards.
• Ensure effective teamwork and communication with the multidisciplinary team.
• Manage departmental resources, report equipment faults, and uphold infection‑control standards.
• Prepare patients for procedures under sedation or general anaesthesia and maintain up‑to‑date clinical knowledge.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse qualified to practice in Ireland.
• Commitment to professional standards, continuous development and accountability.
• Ability to work autonomously, coordinate care and support junior staff.
• Willingness to adhere to ethical policies and maintain patient dignity.
