Automation Software Engineer

About the role

We are looking for an Automation Software Engineer to design, develop, test and maintain manufacturing and automation applications. You will work on both backend services and operator interfaces, supporting our digital manufacturing initiatives in Ballina.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain C#/.NET (Framework and Core) applications for shop‑floor automation.
• Build backend services, APIs and integrations linking PLCs, SCADA, Batch systems with enterprise applications and databases.
• Create operator and engineering user interfaces using Vue.js and the Ignition platform.
• Work with Microsoft SQL Server – write efficient queries, design schemas and implement data access via Entity Framework or Dapper.
• Integrate software with industrial devices and external vendor systems.
• Support and enhance platforms such as FactoryTalk Batch, SCADA, HMI and PLC data collection.
• Manage source control and CI/CD pipelines in GitLab, applying DevOps and containerisation practices (including Kubernetes where relevant).
• Troubleshoot performance issues, ensure robust testing, validation and documentation.

Required profile

• Minimum 2 years of experience in software development and systems support.
• Ability to work independently and proactively in a production‑critical environment.
• Methodical, well‑structured approach with good judgement and decision‑making skills.
• Strategic mindset and ability to deliver projects in complex systems.
