Clinical Nurse Specialist – Medical Oncology (Limerick)

About the role

The Clinical Nurse Specialist – Medical Oncology will deliver expert, autonomous nursing care to patients throughout their cancer journey, from diagnosis to survivorship. Working within a newly established oncology centre, you will be a pivotal point of contact for patients and families, providing assessment, symptom management, education and telephone triage.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialist nursing services to new and existing cancer patients.
• Conduct comprehensive assessments (physical, psychological, social, spiritual) and develop individualized care plans with the MDT.
• Monitor response to systemic anti‑cancer therapy (SACT) and manage treatment‑related toxicities.
• Run nurse‑led clinics, unscheduled reviews and telephone triage using the UKONS framework.
• Coordinate investigations, treatment pathways and follow‑up care.
• Deliver patient and family education before, during and after treatment.
• Support medication reconciliation and polypharmacy management.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and survivorship outcome databases.
• Lead development and implementation of evidence‑based policies, procedures and guidelines.
• Act as a clinical resource for nursing, medical, pharmacy and allied health colleagues.
• Advocate for patients, promote shared decision‑making and uphold dignity, privacy and confidentiality.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with extensive experience in medical oncology.
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and lead within a multidisciplinary team.
• Familiarity with NCCP guidelines, UKONS triage framework and HIQA standards.
• Strong commitment to evidence‑based practice, patient‑centred care and continuous improvement.
