Clinical Research Fellow

About the role

This fixed‑term position offers surgeons in training the opportunity to conduct original research, deliver surgical education and contribute to a busy middle‑grade rota at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. You will be based in the University of Aberdeen Research and Education Unit offices and work alongside the Academic Surgical Unit.

Key responsibilities

• Undertake independent research leading to an MD, PhD or other postgraduate qualification (MSc, ChM).
• Participate in the middle‑grade surgical rota, covering weekday nights and weekends.
• Provide surgical teaching to medical students from the University of Aberdeen and ScotGEM.
• Collaborate with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s SERI Lab on education research.
• Contribute to research themes such as robotic‑assisted surgery, multi‑centre clinical studies, early diagnostics and surgical training.

Required profile

• Currently a surgeon in training with a strong interest in academic surgery.
• Willingness to commit to a 12‑36 month full‑time research period.
• Ability to balance clinical duties with research and teaching responsibilities.

Required skills

• Experience in surgical practice and clinical research methodology.
• Familiarity with robotic‑assisted surgical techniques is advantageous.
