Consultant Neonatologist (University Hospital Galway & Portiuncula Hospital)

About the role

The Health Service Executive (HSE) West and North West is seeking a Consultant Neonatologist to provide specialist neonatal care across University Hospital Galway and Portiuncula Hospital. This permanent, whole‑time position works 29 hours per week and is open to both HSE and non‑HSE applicants.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver high‑quality neonatal intensive care to newborns in both hospitals.
• Lead and develop the neonatal units, including service planning and quality improvement.
• Supervise and mentor junior doctors, nurses and allied health staff.
• Participate in on‑call rotas and emergency neonatal resuscitations.
• Contribute to clinical research, audit activities and teaching programmes.

Required profile

• Medical degree with full registration on the Irish Medical Council.
• Specialist training and recognised consultant status in neonatology.
• Experience working in a neonatal intensive care setting.
• Ability to work 29 hours per week across two sites.
• Eligibility to apply as an HSE or non‑HSE candidate.
