Embedded Systems Manager / Senior Firmware Lead – Energy Management & EV Charging

About the role

EVHACS is seeking an experienced Embedded Systems Manager / Senior Firmware Lead to own the development of Elliot, its ESP32‑based energy‑management and EV‑charging controller. The role combines hands‑on firmware coding with technical leadership of the firmware roadmap and mentorship of a junior engineer.

Key responsibilities

• Define and execute the Elliot firmware roadmap, balancing new features, reliability, technical debt, testing and OTA updates.
• Provide hands‑on leadership: develop firmware, conduct design and code reviews, make architecture decisions and mentor a less experienced engineer.
• Develop and maintain firmware using the Espressif ESP‑IDF framework (v4.4.6) and FreeRTOS for multi‑tasking.
• Implement device communication with the EVHACS backend on AWS, supporting EV charging, home energy management, heating control, solar matching and telemetry.
• Design state‑machine models for charging logic, scheduling and fault handling.
• Implement and maintain Modbus and OCPP communication protocols.
• Debug firmware issues via logs, serial output, cloud telemetry and hardware testing.
• Collaborate closely with backend, app and hardware teams to deliver end‑to‑end features.
• Review and improve existing firmware architecture for reliability and maintainability.

Required profile

• Strong background in embedded C development for real‑time systems.
• Experience with IoT devices, cloud‑connected products and AWS services.
• Proficiency in ESP32 hardware and ESP‑IDF framework.
• Ability to lead technical direction, mentor junior engineers and manage a firmware roadmap.
• Comfortable working across firmware, hardware interfaces, communication protocols and backend integration.
