Infant Feeding Specialist (Lactation Consultant) – Public Health Nurse

About the role

The Health Service Executive is recruiting a Public Health Nurse (PHN) Infant Feeding Specialist, also known as a Lactation Consultant, to join the Public Health Nursing Service covering Sligo, South Donegal/Leitrim and West Cavan. This permanent position offers the opportunity to provide expert infant feeding support to families across a mixed urban‑rural area.

Key responsibilities

• Provide evidence‑based lactation advice and support to new and expectant parents.
• Assess and manage infant feeding difficulties, including breastfeeding challenges.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary health teams to promote optimal infant nutrition.
• Deliver education sessions for parents, carers and health professionals.
• Maintain accurate clinical records and contribute to service development.

Required profile

• Registered Public Health Nurse with a minimum of five years post‑registration clinical experience.
• Demonstrated expertise in infant feeding and lactation support.
• Ability to practice safely and effectively within the professional scope.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach.
