ISL Specialist Classroom Support (ISL‑SCS)

About the role

The ISL Specialist Classroom Support (ISL‑SCS) provides intensive, in‑class communication assistance to individual students whose primary language is Irish Sign Language (ISL). Working within mainstream schools, the specialist ensures that curriculum content is fully accessible to ISL users.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver real‑time ISL interpretation and mediation of teacher instruction for designated students.
• Collaborate with class/subject teachers and Special Education Teachers (SET) to develop, implement, and review student support plans.
• Assist the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) in delivering effective special‑education support across school communities.
• Ensure compliance with NCSE, Department of Education and Youth regulations, procedures, policies, and relevant circulars (e.g., Circular 0072/2025).
• Report progress and concerns to the designated Team Manager.

Required profile

• Eligibility under Circular 0072/2025 for ISL‑SCS provision.
• Strong proficiency in Irish Sign Language (ISL) as a primary means of communication.
• Ability to work under the direction of classroom teachers and collaborate with special‑education staff.
• Commitment to supporting students in mainstream educational settings.
