Mechanical Maintenance Engineer – Shift Technician

About the role

The shift Mechanical Maintenance Engineer will be responsible for maintaining and optimising critical utility plant equipment across fuel oil, industrial gas, turbines, boilers, compressors and diesel generators. The role operates on a rotating 12.25‑hour shift pattern, providing both day and night coverage and supporting emergency situations outside normal hours.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate daily activities with on‑site shift technicians and manage hand‑overs between shifts.
• Serve as the primary contact for service providers and lead high‑level troubleshooting of plant equipment failures.
• Perform root‑cause analysis, record deviations and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
• Execute planned preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance tasks on time.
• Develop and maintain PM schedules, job plans and SOPs within the CMMS (Pemac) system.
• Work with the site planner to identify spare‑part requirements and optimise the maintenance programme for maximum uptime.
• Support capital improvement projects, commissioning activities and complex utility service isolations.

Required profile

• Strong knowledge of fuel oil storage and distribution systems.
• Experience with industrial gas installations and distribution.
• Familiarity with gas and steam turbines, diesel generators, boilers, compressors and pumps.
• Ability to make informed decisions on plant shutdowns, standby systems and outage response.
• Leadership capability to mentor team members and drive continuous improvement.
