Part-Time Appeals Officer

About the role

The Tribunal for Asylum and Returns Appeals (TARA) is establishing a new statutory body to handle international protection appeals. As a Part‑Time Appeals Officer you will join this independent tribunal and contribute to its quasi‑judicial functions.

Key responsibilities

• Manage assigned casework and maintain accurate appeal files.
• Review notices of appeal and supporting documentation.
• Make and issue legally‑sound decisions on appeals.
• Conduct oral hearings and ensure procedural fairness.
• Deliver decisions within established timeframes and in line with guidelines issued by the Chief Appeals Officer.

Required profile

• Eligible for appointment under the International Protection Act 2026.
• Willing to serve a seven‑year term, with a possible additional three‑year term.
• Ability to work part‑time on a contract‑for‑services basis.
• Commitment to upholding the independence and integrity of the tribunal.
