About the role
The Pharmacy Technician supports pharmacists in a hospital setting by ensuring safe, accurate, and efficient medication dispensing, compounding, and inventory management. The role involves both technical and administrative tasks to maintain high standards of patient care.
Key responsibilities
- Screen, check, and process inpatient, outpatient, and discharge prescriptions for completeness and legality.
- Prepare, compound, and dispense medications according to pharmacy protocols, verifying accuracy against original prescriptions.
- Provide patients with medication usage instructions and refer complex queries to the pharmacist.
- Repackage, label, and ensure proper packaging of bulk medications for traceability and compliance.
- Maintain the “5 Rights” of medication safety throughout dispensing and distribution.
- Monitor stock levels, prepare indents, rotate slow‑moving items, and report discrepancies.
- Process ward‑returned medications, conduct inventory reconciliation, and support stock‑taking activities.
- Enter prescriptions, manage inventory, and handle billing using electronic pharmacy systems.
- Collaborate with pharmacists, doctors, and nursing staff to support patient care workflows.
- Assist and train new pharmacy assistants and trainees.
