Suicide Crisis Assessment Nurse – Traveller Health

About the role

The HSE Mid-West is establishing a Suicide Crisis Assessment Nurse (SCAN) service dedicated to the traveller community in Limerick. The role provides timely, specialist assessment and treatment for individuals experiencing suicidal crises, with a focus on culturally appropriate care for travellers.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct rapid suicide risk assessments for members of the traveller community.
• Develop and implement individualized safety and treatment plans.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary mental health teams, community workers, and primary care providers.
• Provide crisis intervention, counselling, and referral to appropriate services.
• Collect and report data to inform service development and public health monitoring.
• Participate in outreach and education initiatives aimed at reducing suicide rates among travellers.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse qualification with current registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
• Experience in mental health nursing, preferably with exposure to crisis assessment.
• Demonstrated understanding of the traveller community’s cultural and health needs.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
