Healthcare Assistant – Residential Care

About the role

We are looking for a compassionate Healthcare Assistant to join St Peters Nursing Home in Castlebellingham, Co Louth. You will support residents in daily living activities, ensuring their dignity, comfort and wellbeing in a friendly, home‑like environment.

Key responsibilities

• Assist residents with personal care tasks such as washing, toileting, dressing and mobility.
• Provide emotional, physical and spiritual support, respecting each resident’s individuality.
• Monitor residents with confusion or behavioural challenges and report observations to senior staff.
• Support continence promotion and care for residents with progressive illness or end‑of‑life needs.
• Facilitate social activities, encourage hobbies and help with meal times, taking into account dietary and swallowing requirements.
• Answer the nurse call system, respond to visitors, manage telephone calls and ensure clear communication.
• Maintain clean and tidy rooms, change beds, empty commodes and clean equipment such as wheelchairs and hearing aids.
• Assist with clothing care, record keeping and uphold privacy for dying and bereaved residents.

Required profile

• Genuine interest in working within a caring environment.
• Ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
• Team‑player attitude and willingness to learn.
• FETEC/NFQ 5 qualification or equivalent, with a commitment to ongoing training.

Required skills

• Basic knowledge of personal care and hygiene procedures.
• Understanding of health and safety standards in a residential care setting.
