Building Inspector – Structural Safety & Code Enforcement

About the role

The Building Inspector ensures the structural safety of new, altered, and existing buildings and enforces compliance with municipal ordinances, state laws, and accepted construction practices. Working independently in the field, the inspector evaluates plans, conducts inspections, and prepares detailed reports for senior officials.

Key responsibilities

• Review building plans and specifications to verify conformity with legal and zoning requirements.
• Advise builders, owners, architects, engineers, and legal professionals on code interpretation and construction issues.
• Inspect construction sites, alterations, and repairs for compliance with building and zoning regulations, including foundations, framing, materials, and workmanship.
• Conduct periodic inspections of older or potentially hazardous structures, especially those at risk of condemnation.
• Inspect public assembly places for structural condition, fire protection, lighting, exits, and overall safety.
• Investigate complaints, gather evidence of violations, and issue verbal or written correction orders.
• Obtain court orders when necessary, appear in court to enforce compliance, and testify in related legal matters.
• Prepare comprehensive reports documenting findings, actions taken, and recommendations for occupancy permits or further action.

Required profile

• Thorough knowledge of municipal building and zoning ordinances, as well as state construction laws.
• Strong understanding of building materials, construction methods, and techniques.
• Familiarity with fire prevention, lighting, ventilation, and safe egress requirements.
• Ability to recognize faulty construction, hazardous conditions, and code violations.
