Chief Fire Officer

About the role

The Chief Fire Officer leads Kilkenny County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service and Civil Defence, shaping strategy and ensuring safe, effective emergency response for the community.

Key responsibilities

• Overall management and administration of the Fire and Rescue Service and Civil Defence.
• Develop and implement strategic plans, driving change across fire and emergency operations.
• Prepare and manage budgetary estimates, ensuring financial resources are used efficiently.
• Collaborate with internal teams, neighbouring fire services, and external stakeholders including property owners, government departments, media, courts, elected officials, and union representatives.
• Represent the service in public and professional forums, maintaining strong community relations.

Required profile

• Extensive senior leadership experience within fire services or related emergency organisations.
• Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans and manage large budgets.
• Strong stakeholder management skills, including interaction with government bodies, media, and unions.
• Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
