Design Engineer – Plastics Fabrication

About the role

We are looking for a skilled Design Engineer to join our plastics fabrication workshop in Dungarvan. The role involves creating detailed designs for plastic components, assemblies, jigs and fixtures, and ensuring they are ready for efficient production.

Key responsibilities

• Develop 2D and 3D models of plastic parts using CAD tools such as Spaceclaim, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor or AutoCAD.
• Translate customer concepts, sketches and specifications into manufacturable designs and produce engineering drawings, cutting lists and technical documentation.
• Perform design‑for‑manufacture (DFM) evaluations and select appropriate plastics (acrylic, polycarbonate, PVC, HDPE, ABS) based on performance and cost.
• Collaborate with workshop staff to understand CNC routing, laser cutting, thermoforming, bending, bonding and welding capabilities, providing technical guidance during build phases.
• Troubleshoot design or production issues, propose practical solutions and contribute to continuous‑improvement initiatives.
• Work with sales and project managers to prepare design proposals, cost estimates and feasibility assessments.

Required profile

• Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, Product Design or equivalent experience.
• Strong understanding of plastics fabrication processes and material properties.
• Excellent problem‑solving ability and a hands‑on mindset.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD software (Spaceclaim, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD).
• Knowledge of CNC routing, laser cutting, thermoforming, plastic welding and bonding techniques.
• Experience in design‑for‑manufacture (DFM) and creation of engineering drawings.
