Rack Decommissioning Technician – Data Center

About the role

The Decommissioning Technical team processes large‑scale legacy data‑center equipment for removal and ensures customer data is securely sanitized. This entry‑level position is hands‑on, follows strict SOPs, and works primarily on‑site in Amazon data‑center facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Decommission and process legacy hardware from data‑center premises.
• Lift, move, and relocate equipment (typically ≤75 lb).
• Unpack, repack, and label fragile electronics with barcodes.
• Install, remove, and securely destroy hard drives.
• Perform basic networking equipment removal, installation, and configuration clearing.
• Update progress via a web‑based ticketing system and report status.
• Document procedures and escalate issues to senior technicians as needed.

Required profile

• Self‑starter with high motivation and ability to follow strict processes.
• Comfortable performing repetitive tasks with consistent results.
• Willingness to work in a team environment and collaborate across functions.
• Ability to work shift‑based schedules if required.

Required skills

• Lifting and moving equipment up to 75 lb.
• Unpacking and repacking fragile electronics.
• Creating and attaching labels and barcodes.
• Hard‑drive installation, removal and secure destruction.
• Basic networking equipment removal, installation and configuration clearing.
• Familiarity with PC components (HDD, SSD, flash storage, USB, FireWire, eSATA, RAM, CPU, motherboard, I/O devices).
• Using a web‑based ticketing system for progress updates.
