Staff Nurse – Operating Department

About the role

The Staff Nurse will join the Operating Department at Children’s Health Ireland in Dublin South, providing high‑quality nursing care to paediatric patients undergoing surgical procedures. This full‑time permanent position works within a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and effective peri‑operative care.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver pre‑operative and post‑operative nursing care to children and families.
• Monitor patients’ vital signs, pain levels and recovery progress.
• Assist the surgical team with equipment preparation, positioning and aseptic technique.
• Maintain strict infection‑control standards and ensure theatre cleanliness.
• Document nursing interventions accurately and communicate updates to the care team.
• Respond promptly to emergencies and provide basic life‑support as required.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse qualified and registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
• Experience or strong interest in surgical/operating theatre nursing, preferably paediatric.
• Ability to work flexible shift patterns, including evenings and weekends.
• Excellent communication skills and a compassionate approach to child‑centred care.

Required skills

• Patient assessment and monitoring.
• Intravenous therapy and medication administration.
• Wound care and aseptic technique.
• Use of operating theatre equipment and supplies.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
