Advanced Specialist Pharmacist – Infectious Disease/HIV

About the role

The Advanced Specialist Pharmacist will lead the clinical pharmacy service for patients with infectious diseases and HIV within Galway University Hospitals. This permanent, full‑time position focuses on delivering expert medication management, supporting infection prevention and control, and driving service improvement initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialist clinical pharmacy advice to multidisciplinary teams caring for infectious disease and HIV patients.
• Develop, implement and evaluate infection prevention and control protocols for vulnerable patient groups.
• Lead and manage pharmacy‑related improvement projects that enhance service delivery and patient outcomes.
• Oversee the use, storage and safe handling of high‑risk medicines in accordance with legislation.
• Mentor and develop pharmacy staff, fostering a collaborative team environment.
• Analyse clinical and commercial literature to inform evidence‑based practice.

Required profile

• Post‑qualification experience in infectious disease or HIV pharmacy.
• Strong knowledge of clinical pharmacy service provision and infection control principles.
• Proven ability to manage caseloads, prioritize work and lead multidisciplinary teams.
• Understanding of health economics, resource management and healthcare evaluation.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with staff at all organisational levels.

Required skills

• Proficiency with electronic patient information and prescribing systems.
