Apprentice Maintenance Fitter

About the role

We are looking for an Apprentice Maintenance Fitter to join the maintenance team at our busy beef & lamb abattoir plant. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will work alongside experienced technicians to learn the trade of a fitter in a dynamic food‑processing environment.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with the repair of industrial production equipment such as machines, conveyors, packaging machines, gearboxes, bearings and hydraulic systems.
• Support the Lead Maintenance Technician in implementing preventative maintenance programmes for assigned machinery.
• Monitor plant machinery and equipment continuously to identify issues early.
• Participate in real‑time repairs to minimise downtime and restore equipment to operational status.
• Document all maintenance activities and communicate potential problems to management.
• Follow all company safety policies and procedures at all times.

Required profile

• Strong interest in learning about machines, conveyors, packaging equipment, gearboxes, hydraulics and welding.
• Enthusiastic, hardworking and able to stay calm under pressure.
• Flexible and open to new ideas, work practices and peak‑time demands.
• Good communication skills and a willingness to develop technical expertise.
• Basic electrical knowledge is an advantage but not essential.

• Use of a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Basic electrical knowledge.
• Understanding of hydraulic systems.
• Gearbox repair techniques.
• Welding fundamentals.
