Head of Finance – Public Sector (70‑80K)

About the role

This senior leadership position is within a high‑profile public‑sector organisation undergoing major transformation. The Head of Finance will shape financial strategy, governance and performance while partnering with senior leaders.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop high‑performing teams across finance, performance, procurement and risk.
• Oversee budget setting, financial planning, forecasting and reporting processes.
• Ensure timely production of management and statutory accounts with robust controls.
• Provide financial insight, business cases and investment appraisals to support strategic decisions.
• Develop long‑term financial plans and sustainability initiatives.
• Manage performance frameworks, compliance reporting and risk management activities.
• Oversee procurement, contract governance and commercial best practice.
• Engage with auditors, sponsoring bodies and key stakeholders, presenting to senior leadership and governance committees.
• Drive improvements in systems, policies, controls and corporate processes.
• Support organisational change projects and deputise for the Director when required.

Required profile

• Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA or equivalent).
• Significant post‑qualified experience in a large, complex organisation.
• Proven leadership of multi‑disciplinary professional teams.
• Strong expertise in financial management, budgeting, forecasting, reporting and audit.
• Experience presenting complex financial information to executive teams or boards.
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Track record of driving organisational improvement, governance and performance outcomes.
