About the role

The Ombudsman for Children’s Office is seeking a Senior Communications and Engagement Officer to lead proactive and reactive media strategies, enhance public understanding of children’s rights, and support the Office’s mission across Ireland.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop, deliver and support media strategies in partnership with the Head of Communications and Public Affairs.
  • Draft, review and approve press material, including statements, news releases and briefings.
  • Identify strategic media opportunities, build relationships with journalists and represent the Office at high‑profile events.
  • Monitor external environments (media, political, children’s rights) and provide insights for strategy and policy development.
  • Lead creative campaigns, internal and external communications, and manage key projects to maximise visibility and engagement.
  • Line‑manage and mentor the Communications Project Officer, fostering collaboration and a positive staff culture.

Required profile

  • Level 8 NFQ qualification in Journalism, Communications, PR, Marketing or related field (or 5‑6 years relevant experience).
  • 3‑4 years experience in communications, media relations or a similar role.
  • Proven expertise in media campaign development and strong writing/creative abilities.
  • Experience managing projects, stakeholder engagement and thriving in fast‑paced environments.
  • Strong judgment, networking and interpersonal skills with a genuine commitment to children’s rights.
