Software Engineer II – Java/Spring Backend

About the role

Mastercard is looking for a Software Engineer II to design, develop, test, and maintain backend services and APIs that support its digital payments ecosystem. The role focuses on building secure, scalable, and maintainable software using modern engineering practices.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services, APIs, and integration components.
• Build secure, scalable, and maintainable software solutions using modern engineering practices.
• Develop and support RESTful APIs, service‑to‑service integrations, and data exchange patterns across internal platforms.
• Collaborate with product owners, architects, engineers, data engineers, and data scientists to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Participate in design discussions, code reviews, testing, and release activities to ensure high‑quality software delivery.
• Apply secure coding, logging, monitoring, and operational readiness practices throughout the development lifecycle.
• Troubleshoot production issues, perform root‑cause analysis, and contribute to long‑term reliability improvements.
• Contribute to automation, CI/CD pipelines, and engineering process improvements.

Required profile

• 3+ years of hands‑on software engineering experience building backend services or APIs.
• Strong programming experience in Java and/or Python.
• Experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs and working with microservices architectures.
• Good understanding of the software development lifecycle, including design, coding, testing, code review, CI/CD, and production support.
• Proficiency with SQL and relational or analytical data stores.
• Familiarity with Git, Unix/Linux environments, shell scripting, and automated build/deployment pipelines.
• Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills.
• Understanding of secure coding practices, authentication/authorization, and data protection.
• Excellent communication and collaborative skills.
