Associate Professor in Machine Learning and NLP (Social Media Analytics)

About the role

The School of Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW seeks an Associate Professor to lead research and teaching in Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing, with a focus on social media analytics. This senior academic position will shape the strategic direction of AI and NLP research, mentor emerging scholars, and contribute to curriculum development.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct high‑impact research on large language models, social media analytics, model alignment and interpretability.
• Secure competitive research funding and lead interdisciplinary research initiatives.
• Supervise higher‑degree research students to successful completion.
• Deliver high‑quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and contribute to curriculum design.
• Engage with industry partners and contribute to the School’s research profile and strategic planning.

Required profile

• Established academic with a strong, sustained record of high‑impact AI/NLP research.
• National or international reputation in large language models, social media analytics or related fields.
• Proven ability to obtain research funding and lead research teams.
• Experience in supervising PhD/MPhil candidates and delivering university‑level teaching.
• Demonstrated leadership in academic governance or strategic initiatives.
