Backend Engineer – Payments & Risk APIs

About the role

Stripe is looking for experienced backend engineers to help shape its payments and risk platforms. You will design and extend APIs that manage billions of money‑movement requests, enabling enterprises and SMBs to move funds securely and efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Scope, design, build, and maintain high‑performance APIs and services for balance management and funds accessibility.
• Debug and resolve critical production incidents across multiple layers of the stack.
• Mentor junior engineers and promote best engineering practices.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams—including infrastructure, product, and risk—to deliver new features at scale.
• Improve internal tooling, standards, and processes for large‑scale systems.

Required profile

• 2–12+ years of professional software engineering experience (excluding internships and co‑ops).
• Strong coding ability in at least one programming language.
• Experience building reliable, scalable backend services that handle high transaction volumes.
• Ability to work effectively in a distributed, hybrid environment.
