Community Engagement Project Worker

About the role

The Community Engagement Project Worker supports Merchants Quay Ireland’s Riverbank Open Access Day Centre by building positive relationships with local residents, businesses and clients. The role aims to reduce anti‑social behaviour, substance misuse and homelessness impacts in the surrounding area while maintaining a safe, welcoming environment.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct regular patrols of the Riverbank area to monitor activity and address community concerns.
• Collect and safely dispose of drug paraphernalia and used needles.
• Engage directly with clients, providing respectful, non‑judgmental support and managing challenging behaviour when required.
• Liaise with local residents, businesses and authorities to foster trust and promote understanding of MQI services.
• Report incidents, maintain accurate records and contribute to continuous improvement of service delivery.

Required profile

• Experience working with vulnerable or marginalized populations.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and flexibly across all days of the week.
• Understanding of harm‑reduction principles and community safety.
• Physical stamina for outdoor patrols and handling of potentially hazardous materials.
