Consultant Physician in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus

About the role

We are seeking a Consultant Physician to lead and develop our Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus service at Wexford General Hospital. The role combines direct patient care, service development, teaching and research within a modernised care pathway.

Key responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive diabetes care for ambulatory and inpatient services.
• Deliver outpatient diabetes clinics across ambulatory hubs and acute settings, including virtual and rapid‑access appointments.
• Triage and respond to GP queries via Healthlink letters, phone or email.
• Supervise specialist nurse/HSCP clinics and oversee virtual case‑review sessions.
• Participate in the on‑call rota for general medical/endocrinology services.
• Contribute to service planning, quality improvement and strategic development of the diabetes service.
• Engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and support research activities.
• Collaborate with endocrinology colleagues to integrate care across the hospital.

Required profile

• Qualified Consultant Physician with recognised expertise in endocrinology and diabetes mellitus.
• Proven experience in leading multidisciplinary diabetes services.
• Ability to manage service development, education and quality improvement initiatives.
• Willingness to undertake on‑call duties for medical/endocrinology services.
• Strong communication skills for interaction with GPs, patients and multidisciplinary teams.

• Familiarity with virtual clinic platforms and electronic health record systems.
