Controls Engineer

About the role

AIR Sligo is looking for a dynamic Controls Engineer to design, develop and implement complex control systems for automation equipment. You will work on innovative projects within a highly technical, collaborative engineering team serving global manufacturing clients.

Key responsibilities

• Develop concepts and specifications from User Requirement Specifications in collaboration with the wider engineering group.
• Design, program, debug and commission machine control software including PLC, HMI, robotics, motion control and vision systems.
• Research, develop and implement new control technologies.
• Coordinate and manage the controls elements during equipment build and debug phases.
• Deliver controls aspects of projects on schedule and within budget.
• Liaise with customers on requirements and project deliverables.
• Develop supplier relationships for component procurement.
• Ensure design, commissioning and safety of control systems meet EU standards.
• Provide guidance to junior staff and produce machine documentation.

Required profile

• Degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
• Minimum 5 years experience creating machine control systems.
• Excellent communication skills for daily technical direction and issue resolution.
• Self‑starter with strong attention to detail and ownership of project milestones.
• Project management experience is advantageous.
• Valid driving licence and ability to travel as required.

Required skills

• Programming AB ControlLogix and Siemens S7 PLCs.
• Configuring, commissioning and debugging machine networks and drive systems.
• Robotics platforms: ABB, Fanuc, Mitsubishi, Epson.
• Machine vision systems: Cognex, Keyence.
• Experience with PLC/HMI, motion control and vision integration.
