Design Engineer – Transportation

About the role

Roughan O’Donovan (ROD) is seeking a Design Engineer to join its expanding transportation team in Cork. The role involves contributing to a multidisciplinary team delivering rail, road, light‑rail and active‑travel projects across Ireland and the UK.

Key responsibilities

• Support the design and delivery of transport infrastructure projects from concept through construction and maintenance.
• Prepare technical documentation such as option selection reports, design reports and Environmental Impact Assessment reports.
• Apply relevant standards, including Transport Infrastructure Ireland publications and the Highways England Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.
• Assist with planning application processes and quality‑assurance procedures.
• Collaborate with engineers, architects and external stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (Level 8 NFQ or equivalent).
• 2‑5 years of design or construction experience on civil engineering projects.
• Familiarity with TII publications or the DMRB, and basic knowledge of planning applications.
• Experience implementing quality procedures and maintaining project records.
• Strong teamwork orientation, work ethic and fluency in spoken and written English.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Competency in AutoCAD (desirable).
