Graduate Engineer – Proof of Principle Modules, Automation Lab

About the role

Join Johnson & Johnson’s Automation Equipment Lab in Limerick as a Graduate Engineer focused on Proof of Principle (POP) modules for next‑generation contact lens manufacturing. You will work on‑site for 12 months, contributing to the design, build, testing and documentation of prototype automation rigs.

Key responsibilities

• Lead defined work packages for mechanical assembly, setup, adjustment, test execution and troubleshooting of lab‑based POP rigs.
• Create and update 2D/3D CAD concepts, sketches, layouts and build notes to support prototype design.
• Design POP modules that improve repeatability, safety, maintainability and test robustness.
• Plan and run trials with robots, end‑of‑arm tooling, vision systems and smart transport equipment.
• Document test results, photographs, risk observations and lessons learned for future project teams.
• Follow site safety procedures and promptly raise hazards or technical risks.

Required profile

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, Robotics, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or a related field.
• Strong interest in hands‑on prototype building, process development and structured problem solving.
• Ability to work safely and methodically in a laboratory or prototype environment.
• Comfortable collaborating in a multidisciplinary team and taking ownership of tasks.

Required skills

• Proficiency with 3D and 2D CAD for mechanical design.
• Working knowledge of robotics, mechanical components, sensors, actuators, PLCs and vision cameras.
• Experience with FEA modelling (advantageous).
• Attention to detail and good documentation discipline.
