Head of Communications

About the role

The Head of Communications will lead all communications activity for the British & Irish Lions, with primary responsibility for the inaugural Lions Women’s Tour in 2027. Reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer, this 18‑month fixed‑term role offers the chance to shape a historic moment in international rugby and steer the broader communications agenda for a global sporting brand.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute the Lions’ overall communications strategy.
• Build and leverage a high‑impact global sports media network to maximise reach.
• Lead communications for the inaugural Lions Women’s Team and all related tour activities.
• Define and deliver corporate communications, PR, and crisis communications plans.
• Direct world‑class media operations and major press events.
• Manage relationships with rights‑holder broadcasters and key media partners.
• Advise senior leadership on communications risks and opportunities.
• Lead media‑training programmes and ensure consistent messaging.
• Represent the Lions at high‑profile events and stakeholder engagements.
• Oversee digital and social communications alignment across owned and earned channels.
• Lead internal communications to ensure organisational alignment.
• Establish KPIs, evaluate impact, and provide insight‑led reporting to the CMO.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in sports communications, preferably within international sport.
• Proven track record leading communications for major events or high‑profile campaigns.
• Strong understanding of the global media landscape, especially rugby and women’s sport.
• Established network of media contacts across the UK, Ireland, and internationally.
• Exceptional communication, leadership, and stakeholder‑management abilities.
• Ability to thrive in a high‑pressure, high‑profile environment.
• High levels of credibility, resilience, flexibility, and integrity.
• Experience managing teams and external agencies.
