Mechanical Technician – Mining Operations

About the role

The Mechanical Technician supports safe and efficient power and utilities operations at Newmont’s Lihir mine. The role focuses on inspections, repairs and maintenance of mechanical equipment to ensure reliability and continuous plant availability.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine mechanical inspections on plant and utility equipment and report defects for planned maintenance.
• Assist in breakdown repairs to restore equipment functionality and monitor asset condition trends.
• Carry out mechanical repairs, adjustments, component replacements and support calibration of mechanical systems.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records, update equipment history and contribute to proactive maintenance planning.
• Track usage of critical spare parts, support inventory control and ensure availability of essential components.
• Follow all site safety protocols, participate in safety meetings and stop unsafe work immediately.
• Identify recurring mechanical issues, recommend improvements and contribute ideas to improve maintenance efficiency.

Required profile

• Mechanical Trade Certificate (e.g., Fitter, Diesel Fitter, Mechanical Technician) or equivalent qualification.
• Apprenticeship or formal trade training with experience in mechanical maintenance within mining, processing, power generation or heavy industry.
• Hands‑on experience with rotating and static plant equipment such as pumps, engines, compressors and conveyors.
• Proven ability in breakdown maintenance, fault finding and preventive maintenance activities.
• Competence in interpreting mechanical drawings, manuals and maintenance procedures.
• Experience using maintenance management systems (e.g., SAP/CMMS) for work‑order execution and history recording.
• Commitment to safe work practices and ability to work on a 28‑days on / 14‑days off FIFO roster in a remote environment.
