Resident Doctor – Eye Casualty (Non‑Consultant)

About the role

This position provides senior non‑consultant medical cover within an Eye Casualty department and associated outpatient services. Working under consultant oversight, the Resident Doctor will deliver autonomous patient care within a defined scope of practice.

Key responsibilities

• Perform high‑quality medical assessment, diagnosis and treatment for patients presenting to Eye Casualty.
• Deliver ongoing inpatient and outpatient care, prescribing and ordering investigations according to clinical protocols.
• Escalate complex cases to the consultant‑led team promptly.
• Undertake senior clinical assessment of acute and non‑acute ophthalmic presentations.
• Perform approved clinical procedures within competence and credentialing.
• Support nursing and multidisciplinary colleagues and maintain accurate medical records.
• Participate in audit, quality‑improvement initiatives and clinical governance.
• Engage in teaching, supervision and service‑development activities.

Required profile

• Full General registration with the Irish Medical Council (specialist registration not required).
• Minimum four years post‑internship clinical experience in acute hospital medicine.
• Prior experience at SHO/Registrar level in eye casualty or eye clinics.
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously within a defined scope.
• Strong clinical judgement and escalation skills.
