Staff Backend Engineer, Voices

About the role

We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to lead the development of core backend systems for next‑generation AI‑powered voice generation. You will design and operate distributed services that orchestrate multiple text‑to‑speech providers and in‑house AI models, delivering high‑quality voice outputs at scale.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend systems powering script preview and voice generation workflows.
• Develop orchestration layers that integrate external text‑to‑speech providers with internal AI models.
• Implement reliability mechanisms such as retries, failover, throttling, and fallback logic for external APIs.
• Create persistence and data‑consistency solutions to ensure reproducible voice outputs.
• Improve storage, retrieval, and reuse of voice assets across the platform.
• Build evaluation and recommendation systems for voice discovery and selection.
• Monitor performance and user‑experience metrics using observability tools.
• Collaborate with frontend, product, and research teams to design APIs and seamless workflows.
• Participate in iterative development cycles, shipping quickly and refining based on data and feedback.

Required profile

• Several years of experience designing, building, and operating production‑grade backend systems.
• Strong proficiency in backend development with Python and FastAPI (or similar frameworks).
• Experience with distributed systems and third‑party API integrations in production.
• Product mindset focused on user‑facing impact.
• Proven ability to design reliable, observable, and scalable services.
• Understanding of system design principles such as consistency, latency, and fault tolerance.
• Comfort collaborating across frontend, backend, and product teams, and working across the full stack when needed.
