Staff Nurse – Pre‑Assessment (Elective Surgery)

About the role
The Staff Nurse in the Pre‑Assessment Service provides comprehensive clinical evaluation and optimisation of elective patients across surgery, cath‑lab, paediatrics and endoscopy. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the nurse ensures patients are fully prepared for admission, supporting safety and efficient patient flow.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct pre‑operative assessments for all elective procedures, including surgery, catheterisation, paediatric and endoscopic cases.
- Perform detailed history taking, medication review, allergy checks and risk factor identification.
- Carry out and interpret baseline investigations such as phlebotomy, ECG, vital signs and relevant screening tests.
- Assess patient suitability, provide education on fasting, medication and postoperative expectations.
- Coordinate referrals to specialist services (anaesthetics, cardiology, respiratory, diabetes) as needed.
- Document assessments accurately in electronic and paper records.
- Schedule appointments, follow‑up investigations and liaise with surgical, anaesthetic and theatre teams to minimise cancellations.
Required profile
- Active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
- Experience in pre‑operative or acute care nursing, preferably within a hospital setting.
- Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and communicate compassionately with patients.
