Associate Director (Architecture) – Design Lead

About the role

Our client, a respected Irish design practice, is expanding its Galway studio and seeks an Associate Director (Architecture) to lead design quality across residential and mixed‑use projects. This senior position combines strategic design leadership with hands‑on project delivery from concept through construction.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design development from feasibility and concept through planning, detailed design and construction stages.
• Oversee multidisciplinary project teams, coordinating planners, engineers, QS, M&E and landscape consultants.
• Ensure compliance with Irish codes such as BCAR, Building Regulations, fire certification, DAC and local authority processes.
• Prepare high‑quality planning submissions, liaise with authorities and present at meetings.
• Review drawings, specifications and tender packages, resolve site queries and RFIs.
• Optimise unit layouts, elevations and façades for buildability and cost efficiency.
• Mentor and manage team members, conduct QA reviews and contribute to fee proposals and programme planning.
• Represent the practice at client meetings and design reviews.

Required profile

• Degree in Architecture or Architectural Technology and registration with RIAI or CIAT.
• 10+ years post‑qualification experience with demonstrable Irish residential and mixed‑use projects.
• Strong knowledge of Irish Building Regulations, BCAR, fire/DAC processes and planning procedures.
• Proven ability to take projects from feasibility to construction, including contractor coordination.
• Excellent client‑facing, reporting and team‑leadership skills.
