Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join Coffey’s water and wastewater infrastructure team, delivering design solutions for treatment plants and pumping stations across the UK and Ireland.

Key responsibilities

• Work closely with the Lead Mechanical Engineer and multidisciplinary teams on preliminary and detailed design of water/wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations.
• Select and specify mechanical equipment such as treatment system components, dosing systems, valves and piping.
• Produce and review drawings, plant layouts, PFDs, P&IDs and technical specifications.
• Carry out hydraulic, energy and mechanical calculations as part of detailed design.
• Support the commercial team during tender and bid processes.
• Maintain compliance with relevant standards (ASME, EN) and health‑safety, quality and ethical requirements.
• Develop relationships with suppliers and customers, mentor junior MEICA staff and stay updated on industry trends.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Minimum 6 years of experience in mechanical design for water/wastewater treatment and pumping stations.
• Proven track record of delivering technical designs on infrastructure projects.
• Strong analytical mindset, problem‑solving ability and capacity to work independently.
• Understanding of quality, safety and commercial drivers in large‑scale projects.

Required skills

• Mechanical design of water and wastewater treatment processes.
• Pumping station design and equipment selection.
• Creation of PFDs, P&IDs and detailed engineering drawings.
• Hydraulic, energy and mechanical calculations.
• Knowledge of ASME, EN or equivalent international codes.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Experience with 2D/3D CAD software.
