About the role
The Blood Bank Technician will supervise and perform all technical activities related to blood collection, testing, processing, storage, and issue within a hospital setting. The role ensures compliance with national standards, safety protocols, and hospital policies to deliver safe transfusion services.
Key responsibilities
- Perform blood grouping, cross‑matching, antibody screening, and compatibility testing.
- Handle collection, processing, separation, labeling, storage, and issue of blood components such as PRBC, platelets, FFP, and cryoprecipitate.
- Conduct transfusion‑transmitted infection testing (HIV, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Malaria) following standard protocols.
- Operate and maintain equipment including centrifuges, refrigerators, blood storage cabinets, incubators, and cell separators.
- Maintain SOPs, quality‑control measures, and accurate inventory records.
- Prepare regulatory documentation, audit reports, and manage donor adverse reactions.
- Promote voluntary donation, organize blood‑donation camps, and participate in quality‑assurance schemes.
Required profile
- Diploma or B.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT / BMLT).
- Minimum 5 years experience in a hospital‑based blood bank or transfusion service.
- Strong knowledge of transfusion medicine, blood‑bank protocols, and relevant regulatory guidelines.
- Ability to work under pressure, especially in emergencies, and lead a team.
- Proficiency with laboratory information systems and basic computer skills.
