ITS Technician I – Intelligent Transportation Systems

About the role

The State Highway Administration (SHA) is seeking an ITS Technician I to support its statewide Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), fiber, and radio communication networks. The role involves hands‑on technical work on highway corridors, providing troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and procurement for a variety of communication and traffic‑management equipment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical support for the SOC CHART Program and SHA’s ITS, fiber, and radio systems.
• Repair, maintain, and troubleshoot voice, data, and RF communication equipment.
• Design, integrate, install, and maintain wireless systems, digital and fiber‑optic transmission links.
• Operate and service ITS devices such as speed detectors, highway advisory radios, CCTV cameras, dynamic message signs, weather stations, and lane‑control signals.
• Work on highway shoulders, often exposed to traffic, and respond to 24/7 emergency call‑outs.
• Report daily to the primary ITS Division office in Catonsville, MD, and support regional communications as needed.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least one year of experience repairing electronic communication equipment.
• Valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license; ability to obtain a Class B Maryland Commercial Driver’s License.
• Possession of an FCC General Radiotelephone Operator’s License or completion of a one‑year radio‑electronics program may substitute for experience.
