Resident Medical Officer – Hospital Role

About the role

The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) will join UPMC Whitfield Hospital in Waterford, providing essential medical care to in‑patients and out‑patients. This position is ideal for doctors early in their career who are preparing for examinations or engaging in research and wish to gain extensive experience across elective procedures.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver medical services in both inpatient and outpatient settings following departmental policies.
• Perform thorough clinical evaluations, explain diagnoses to patients and families, and support collaborative decision‑making.
• Document patient assessments, histories, and physical examinations accurately on admission and in follow‑up notes.
• Diagnose and treat patients under consultant supervision, initiating and monitoring safe treatment plans.
• Liaise with anesthetists, nursing staff, diagnostics, laboratory, and pharmacy to coordinate patient care.
• Respond to Code Blues, lead emergency/cardiac arrest procedures, and ensure continuous on‑site RMO presence.
• Participate in on‑call rosters and assist consultants in operating theatres when required.

Required profile

• Medical graduate in the early stages of their career, preparing for specialty examinations or research.
• Willingness to attend daily shifts and participate in on‑call duties.
• Interest in gaining experience with elective procedures across pre‑op, intra‑op, and post‑op settings.
• Commitment to patient safety, health‑and‑safety standards, and infection‑control protocols.
