Android Platform Engineer

About the role

Motorola Solutions is hiring an Android Platform Engineer for its Astro Device Software team in Cork, Ireland. The role focuses on customising the Android OS under the hood, tailoring the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) to specific hardware needs, with emphasis on optimising the LTE/Cellular stack and network connectivity.

Key responsibilities

• AOSP customisation: modify and extend Android framework layers (Telephony, ConnectivityService, Hardware Abstraction Layers)
• Connectivity optimisation: fine-tune LTE, 5G or Wi-Fi performance, ensuring stable handover in mission-critical environments
• System integration: integrate vendor-specific RIL and modem firmware
• Performance tuning: debug system-level issues with tools such as ADB or Wireshark to fix latency or connectivity drops

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field
• Proven track record of delivering multiple products or projects
• Advantage: hands-on experience with AOSP or similar large-scale open-source frameworks (e.g. Linux)
• Preferred: 5+ years of experience with AOSP and Android internals

Required skills

• Expert Java (JNI required) and C++
• Understanding of LTE/5G protocol stack (NAS, AS, RRC) and Android Telephony Framework and RIL
• Familiarity with Android build tools (Soong, Ninja, Make)
• Tools: Jira, Gerrit, Git, Gradle, Qxdm, dumpsys, tombstone
• Performance analysis, leak checking and strong debugging skills
