Assistant Financial Controller

About the role

We are seeking an Assistant Financial Controller to join the Group Finance team at Smyths Toys. The role supports group functions, delivers accurate financial reporting, drives process improvements, and acts as a bridge between finance, IT, and other business areas.

Key responsibilities

• Support preparation of the Consolidated Group Annual Financial Statements in compliance with FRS102.
• Oversee subsidiary statutory accounts and ensure consistent accounting policies across the group.
• Drive implementation of new accounting standards across the group.
• Assist in managing group audit relationships and coordinate audits across subsidiaries.
• Own the Group month‑end process and produce timely management reports.
• Develop and maintain consolidation and intercompany processes.
• Support a robust control environment and implement improvements.
• Partner with Tax, local Finance teams and wider business to implement Group policies.
• Work with IT to enhance financial systems, reporting tools and automation.
• Act as finance lead on system upgrades and digital transformation projects.
• Ensure data integrity and consistency across reporting and operational systems.
• Communicate complex financial issues to non‑finance stakeholders and build relationships.

Required profile

• Qualified accountant with at least 2 years post‑qualification experience.
• Experience in audit management and statutory reporting.
• Strong technical accounting background, preferably with FRS102.
• Experience in a Big 4 environment is preferred.
• Ability to work across finance, tax, IT and business functions.

Required skills

• Knowledge of FRS102 accounting standards.
• Experience with SAP or similar ERP systems.
• Proficiency in financial consolidation and intercompany processes.
