Consultant Paediatrician – Inherited Metabolic Disorders

About the role

The successful candidate will join the existing team of consultants to deliver comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for children with inherited metabolic disorders. The role includes participation in a 24/7 on‑call roster, ensuring seamless coverage for metabolic patients at local, regional and national levels.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialist clinical care for paediatric metabolic patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Participate fully in the on‑call roster to deliver round‑the‑clock coverage.
• Develop and implement a Shared Island Metabolic Network.
• Lead the expansion of newborn screening programmes and increase the number of conditions screened.
• Extend outreach services to underserved regions such as Wexford/Waterford and Donegal/Sligo.
• Collaborate with the adult metabolic service to establish a transition clinic.
• Set up shared clinics with neuromuscular and neurology colleagues.
• Create a specialist paediatric dyslipidaemia clinic in partnership with the lipid service.

Required profile

• Registration as a specialist paediatrician on the Irish Medical Council register.
• Minimum two years of postgraduate training and experience in paediatric metabolic medicine.
• Demonstrated experience of out‑of‑hours on‑call duties.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Clinical expertise in inherited metabolic disorders.
• Knowledge of newborn screening processes.
• Experience in developing and leading specialised paediatric services.
