Emergency Medicine Consultant

About the role

The Emergency Medicine Consultant provides senior clinical leadership for the Emergency Department (ED) and associated Emergency Care Network units. This role ensures 24/7 senior decision‑making presence and drives the development of high‑quality emergency care services.

Key responsibilities

• Lead clinical management and direction of the ED in partnership with fellow EM consultants.
• Develop, implement and oversee systems of care for all emergency patients across the ED and linked ECN units.
• Provide direct patient care in the ED Clinical Decision Unit, Observation Ward, and Chest Pain Assessment Unit, including rostered ward rounds and cross‑cover.
• Participate in major emergency planning, major incident response, and pre‑hospital coordination as required.
• Supervise, train and allocate duties to Non‑Consultant Hospital Doctors, nurses, advanced practice providers and allied health staff.
• Oversee the education of medical, nursing and allied health students assigned to the ED.
• Engage in academic activities, research, and development of specialised emergency medicine interests.
• Contribute to clinical governance by reviewing and updating the Clinical Directorate Service Plan with senior leadership.

Required profile

• Fully qualified Consultant in Emergency Medicine, registered with the appropriate medical board.
• Proven experience in leading an emergency department and managing multidisciplinary teams.
• Willingness to work out‑of‑hours to ensure continuous senior coverage.
• Commitment to teaching, supervision of junior doctors and allied health professionals.
• Interest in research, quality improvement and development of specialised emergency services.
