Founding Backend Engineer (Java)

About the role

GrandGrand is building the first purpose‑built fintech platform for the B2B economy. As a Founding Backend Engineer you will own the design, development, and operation of the core Java services that power Grand’s credit‑risk and payment products. This is a hands‑on, product‑focused role where you will collaborate directly with founders, designers, AI engineers, and other product engineers to shape the product from day one.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement Java micro‑services and APIs using modern frameworks such as Spring Boot, Micronaut or Quarkus.
• Model and transform messy external data signals into a coherent product surface.
• Build event‑driven pipelines that ingest, enrich, and store data from third‑party sources.
• Operate production systems on AWS with a security‑first mindset, handling audit, compliance and regulated data.
• Design resilient APIs and data models that address latency, retries, idempotency and partial failures.
• Develop search, indexing and query capabilities at scale.
• Integrate AI capabilities into backend workflows where they add measurable value.
• Make product decisions in partnership with founders and iterate on features through the full lifecycle.

Required profile

• Strong experience building production‑grade backend systems in Java.
• Hands‑on expertise with a modern Java framework (Spring Boot, Micronaut, Quarkus).
• Proven ability to design APIs, model data and reason about distributed system concerns.
• Experience shipping and operating services in AWS environments.
• Background with event‑driven or message‑based architectures in production.
